When we arrive at Andros Island, you will discover the third largest
barrier reef in the world. Andros is perhaps the largest tract of
unexplored land in the western hemisphere, dominated by
thick brush, sliced in pieces by inland waterways,
and edged by mangrove swamp.

Additionally, Andros abounds in Blue Holes (underwater cave systems),
40 known species of wild orchids and migrating birds and butterflies.
Population is 10,000 people, most of them residing in small settlements
located on the eastern coast. One such settlement is Fresh Creek
and this is where you will find Joyce McMaster, an artist and cameo carver.

Her home, and studio, has a million dollar view of crystal clear aquamarine water who's beauty gives her inspiration to create some uniquely beautiful works of art. Her career in cameo carving started when she discovered the Bahamian Queen Helmut shells were being exported to Italy. The Bahamas have very few natural resources so she felt it was important to cultivate the art of cameo carving.

The Queen Helmut is from dark chocolate to a light brown in color. From a collectors standpoint, cameos carved from these types of shells will last for centuries with very little care.

Joyce dives for her shells in the grassy protected areas inside the reef, in about 15 to 40 feet of water. She creates traditional cameos i.e., Victorian women, and non-traditional i.e., birds, dolphins, ships or the legendary chickcharnie.

Her work has caught the attention of the local government and plans are in the making for a school. It will be a tourist friendly cameo workshop and gift shop.

Joyce sells her cameos in gift shops in the Bahamas and at trade shows.
