Victorian Homes of the West Coast

Thousands of homeowners have transformed San Francisco into the most colorful city in the world. If there were a Nobel Prize for turning dead architecture into works of art, it would go to the homeowners, colorists, interior designers, and the craftspeople of San Francisco.

The colorists didn't attempt to re-create history. They just wanted to design beautiful houses that pleased their clients. Around the country, dubious historians and preservationists quickly learned that color on Victorians could save them.

Research has proved that San Francisco has always been unique, with a history of both fancy colors and exuberant trim.

1883 Italinate

Few homes can carry such a beautiful
array of pastel colors. The combination used
here softly highlights all the wonderful
architectural achievements.

Blue Heaven

1908 Edwardian
The exterior of this home was done by
Bill Weber and Tony Klaas of Mirage Painting.
This is a wonderful example of the use of
marbleizing and the great effectiveness
of using gold as an accent color.

Chateu Tivoli

1890 Queen Anne/French Revival
This home is a magnificent display of architectural
design and color scheme. Seventeen colors,
plus gold leaf, create a whimsical finishing touch
to a masterpiece of creativity.
